Fair measures, clear guidelines, independent review
Farmers often feel unfairly stigmatised by the approach to the nitrogen problem and are asking for fair measures and clear guidelines. The main cause of nitrogen emissions is manure, which has a harmful effect on nature.
Solutions – Buyouts or relocation of farms
My Vote Counts is in favour of farm buyouts, where the proceeds from sale are taken into account. The owners of many farms hold a lot of value in the form of land. That’s why we advocate giving the current generation and their children generous compensation if the value of their land doesn’t sufficiently compensate them. People who want to farm may do so if they meet the rules. Sometimes relocating within the Netherlands or internationally is also possible. Explore these options; but don’t get stuck the way we are doing now.
Non-violent protest
The Citizens’ Initiative ‘My Vote Counts!’ advocates for normalising the relationship between government and farmers, in which farmers have the right to emotions and the right to demonstrate without violence. We could, for example, propose a binding citizens’ referendum, in which sustainable agriculture and nitrogen reduction are guaranteed not only through buyouts, but also through technological innovation.
